Innovations in Urology - Spring 2018
EDWARD CHERULLO, MD
West Region Urology Director, University Hospitals; Professor of Urology, Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine
Edward Cherullo, MD, is one of six urologists seeing patients in a medical suite at University Hospitals St. John Medical Center that opened in March 2017. “Through our presence on the west side of Cleveland, we are offering the full spectrum of high-quality urologic care,” says Dr. Cherullo. “You can measure that by the complexity and volume of the cases we do.”
In January 2017, more than 60 primary and specialty care providers from Westshore Primary Care joined University Hospitals as part of the acquisition of the former St. John Medical Center, now known as UH St. John Medical Center. Two months later, the UH Urology Institute opened a practice in a medical office building on the hospital campus to better serve patients on the west side of Cleveland, including those from Westshore Primary Care.
“We offer the full range of diagnostic and therapeutic interventions through the medical office and hospital,” says Dr. Edward Cherullo, a general urologist who helped spearhead the opening of the new facility. “We see patients five days a week with all conditions, ranging from female pelvic floor reconstruction and urologic oncology to erectile dysfunction and stone disease.” Joining Dr. Cherullo in the practice are Chris Gonzalez, MD, MBA, FACS, Chairman of the Urology Institute, Adonis Hijaz, MD, and Simon Kim, MD, MPH, as well as two pediatric urologists, Jonathan Ross, MD and Lynn Woo, MD.
With its broad range of expertise, the team handles some of the most complex, multidisciplinary cases in the region. “We’re not typically seeing the routine guy with erectile dysfunction,” says Dr. Cherullo. “Instead, we get referrals for patients with erectile dysfunction that’s refractory to oral or injected medications and who also have associated complicated medical conditions, like heart disease.”
Dr. Cherullo’s specialties include complex stone disease, upper urinary tract reconstruction and bladder, prostate and kidney cancer. He offers several bladder outlet obstruction relieving procedures, including GreenLight™ laser photoselective vaporization of the prostate for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).
“The best part for me about working at University Hospitals, and at the office at St. John Medical Center, is the ability to collaborate with outstanding physicians and surgeons who have the patients’ best interests in mind,” says Dr. Cherullo. “UH resonates in the community with individualized, high-value care.”
